Perhaps Party Girl’s favorite party of the year to cover is the The Krewe of Xanadu’s annual Spring Social in May. After all, keeping the Mardi Gras spirit going all year long is one of my mantras. The Xanadu “Disco Divas” put on their boogie shoes to dance the night away at River Oaks in Lafayette. While every fashionista — and fasionista-wannabe — pulled out their most fabulous frocks and flashiest platform shoes, Party Girl played it low-key with a blonde wig and a very cool retro dress with a psychedelic print. I think with all my decorations, I actually looked like a bit of a wallflower. At least Party Girl’s identity was safe! Prizes were given for the best costumes including best hair, best boogie shoes, best female, best male and best couple. I suspect my friends and dexterous divas, Joan Moody and Erin Spisak, were the ingenious sisters that came up with the theme of this party. I’ll have to call you when I need a clever idea — you girls rock!

Rocking, rolling and two-stepping was the order of the weekend at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, the last big spring festival blowout before summer heat kicked in. Since I don’t mind getting sweaty with a drink in my hand, the muddy dance floor was calling Party Girl’s name. (Lore has it that every Crawfish Festival it pours down early in the mornings before the festival begins.) I suppose I stuck out a bit with my high heels, as shrimp boots were probably the more appropriate dancewear.

To keep me going throughout festival weekend, Party Girl sampled a little bit of everything from the amazing food spread. From fried soft shell crab po-boys, alligator burgers, crawfish étouffée, crawfish dogs and crawfish jambalaya, I tried it all — and I couldn’t resist some boudin and cracklins too. What better fuel for Cajun and zydeco dancing? Party Girl jumped at the chance to see Keith Frank, and I was fired up to be able to use my press pass to get back stage and hang out with the 2008 Crawfish King, Mr. CJ Leblanc, and Crawfish Queen, Miss Nonnie Berard. After a full weekend of sweet Louisiana sounds and eats, I’m already counting down the days to next year’s Crawfish Festival.
