Rep. Julie Emerson's HB28 would create a prestige license plate for Acadiana High School. It is one of at least five vanity plate-related bills up for consideration by the House on Tuesday.

The bill won approval from the House Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee without opposition on April 18. Carencro High School is the only public high school in the area with a prestige plate.

The Legislature has created about 190 prestige plates over the years (officially dubbed special plates). The plates are sold at a premium by the Office of Motor Vehicles. Legislation typically defines how the proceeds from the sale of the plates are to be distributed.

The Independent reached out to Emerson by phone and email for comment on the bill. She had not responded at press time.

Other specialty plate bills up for consideration today are:

HB30 by Rep. Clay Schexnayder of Gonzales. This bill would create the "Louisiana Patriot Guard Riders" specialty plate.

HB65 by Rep. Bob Hensgens of Abbeville would create the "Sabine Pass Lighthouse" specialty plate.

HB191 by Rep. Johnny Guinn of Jennings would rename the "Quail Unlimited" specialty plate to the "Quail Forever" specialty plate.

HB476 by Rep. Chris Hazel of Pineville would modify the distribution of the proceeds from the sales of the "Support Our Troops" specialty plates.
