Christiaan Mader, founding editor of The Current, is set to acquire the magazine from parent company IND Media and resume publication later this year. Officially announced at the ABiz Top 50 Luncheon on Aug. 16, Mader’s takeover will shift the publication's model to a community-supported, primarily digital outlet.
Launched earlier this year, the magazine published three print issues before ceasing production upon the announcement of IND Media's closing. Since then, Mader says he's received overwhelming support from readers who want to see The Current continue.
"Our run was short, but I think we made an undeniable impact. There's no doubt in my mind that there's a market out there for the work we were doing. And I feel a sense of tremendous obligation to keep that going," Mader says. "Journalism is a vital community service. It makes sense to rethink the business model with that in mind."
