Lafayette one of 2 bids for Top 28

Today is the deadline set by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association for a new round of bids from municipal arenas vying to host the boys Top 28 basketball tournament. Barring any 11th hour bids, Lafayette’s Cajundome will be one of two potential host sites, along with Shreveport’s CenturyTel Arena. A story in yesterday’s Advocate, which repeatedly misidentifies Cajundome Director Greg Davis as Greg Brown, confirmed that other major arenas around the state did not plan to bid on the tournament.

The Cajundome has hosted the event for the past 12 years and originally presented the lone bid for the tournament. However, last month the LHSAA’s executive committee rejected that offer, based on its $55,000 facility fee, and chose to re-open the tournament for a new round of bidding. In doing so, the committee allowed Shreveport’s CenturyTel Arena an opportunity to submit a bid that it had submitted past deadline.
