Planning on making a purchase this week? You might want to wait till Friday, as the state's Sales Tax Holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and ends Saturday, Aug. 2, at midnight.
During the holiday, the first $2,500 of the purchase price of most tangible property items for non-business use will be exempt from the 4 percent statewide sales tax. The exemption does not apply to the sales taxes levied by parishes, municipalities, school boards, and other political subdivisions of the state.
The exemption applies to all consumer purchases of tangible personal property, other than motor vehicles and meals sold for consumption on the premises, including to-go orders. Exempt purchases may be made by residents and nonresidents, and all Louisiana dealers are required to participate in the sales tax holiday and allow the state sales tax exemption on eligible sales made during the holiday period.
