Hurricane Gustav heads for the Gulf

by R. Reese Fuller

Hurricane Gustav is expected to hit Haiti today and weaken some, but it will gain strength again before it hits Cuba tomorrow. According to the National Hurricane Center, Gustav is currently a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour.

Current long-term forecasts have the hurricane entering the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico by early Sunday morning. Its own predicted track has the storm entering the center of the Gulf, with a wide cone of probability to veer either northeast or southwest. But the NHC cautions against relying on any long-range forecasts. "One should remember that 4 and 5 day forecasts are subject to potentially large errors in both location and intensity."
