Early voting for the Nov. 4 elections begins tomorrow morning, and will continue from at 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Oct. 28, except for Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Lafayette Parish Registrar of Voters office, 1010 Lafayette Street, Suite 313, 291-7140, [email protected].
On the ballot are presidential candidates Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, Republican Sen. John McCain from Arizona and a host of other candidates representing the Green Party, Louisiana Taxpayers Party, the Prohibition Party and others. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Democrat, faces Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy, Libertarian Richard Fontanesi and two other candidates in her bid for re-election. The race for U.S. Congressional District 7 pits incumbent Charles W. Boustany, Jr., a Republican, against state Senator Donald Cravins, Jr., a Democrat, and Peter Vidrine, Constitution Party. Some Lafayette voters will be choosing between Nancy Landry and Troy Theriot, both Republicans, in a special election for the District 31 state House of Representatives to replace Don Trahan, who resigned to work for the state Department of Education. There are seven Constitutional amendments on the ballot as well.
To cast ballots in the Nov. 4 election, voters must have been registered by Oct. 6. When you go to vote, take a driver’s license, a Louisiana Special ID, or some other generally recognized picture ID. Voters who have no picture ID and bring only a utility bill, payroll check or government document that includes their name and address will have to sign an affidavit furnished by the Elections Division in order to vote.
