Early voting on track

by Mary Tutwiler

The Lafayette Registrar of Voter’s office was “extremely busy” this morning, with the onslaught of people eager to cast their votes early. Tuesday’s count was 1,040 voters, with waits of up to 30 minutes to enter the voting booth. This morning, the wait is down to 10-20 minutes. While it’s busy at the courthouse, the numbers are normal for presidential elections, says Charlene Meaux, Lafayette’s Registrar of Voters. In Iberia Parish, 611 people voted yesterday. “It’s about what I expected” says Iberia Parish registrar Mildred Adams. Overall numbers are up, says Adams, because anyone can vote early, a change in the rules which in previous years called for “absentee voters” to have an excuse in order to vote before election day. Early voting continues through Oct. 28.
