After narrowly retaining its contract to host the Top 28 tournament earlier this year, the Cajundome is now doubling down on its high school basketball bookings. The dome has just announced a new ‘Road to the Championship’ series for this year’s season. Presented by Cox Communications, the series brings some of Acadiana’s top regular season high school basketball action to the dome. Participating schools include Lafayette High, Westgate, St. Thomas More, Acadiana High, Northside High, and others. The first confirmed games will take place in a doubleheader on Monday, Dec. 1. At 6 p.m., Teurlings takes on Acadiana. That game is followed by a 7:30 p.m. matchup between Westgate and St. Thomas More.
The series is considered a win-win for both local participating teams and the dome. The arrangement has high school teams taking in the proceeds from ticket sales while the dome will keep revenues from concession sales. The series will also serve to spotlight local high school basketball in advance of the Top 28 tournament, and give young students more opportunities to play premier facility, featuring $3 million worth of recent technology upgrades.
