UTILITY POLES ARE UGLIER

In response to the article "Pole Position" (Sept. 19), I was struck by the ugliness of the picture of Johnston Street. However, it was not the business signs that made it so, it was the utility poles. I'd encourage your readers to take a look at that picture again but try to see it without the utility poles running up and down the street. After that, start looking at other streets, even in your neighborhood, and imagine how much better they would look without ugly brown poles sticking up every 50 feet or so, and without the crossing wires and cables joining them together. The city-parish council can work on requiring the utility and communications companies to start burying those utility lines and getting rid of those poles. Then come talk to us about signs.
