Wagering at old St. Martinville Wal-Mart?

by Leslie Turk

KLFY-TV10 reported Monday that Evangeline Downs wants to use 12,000 square feet of the abandoned Wal-Mart building in St. Martinville for off-track betting. The building is owned by the city of Saint Martinville, which will receive a portion of the total profits.

Revenues from off-track betting could mean big bucks for the city, the station noted. In addition to sales tax revenue, the city and the parish will share 2 percent of the total revenue.

Evangeline Downs wants to renovate its portion of the building at no cost to the city and is ready to move in immediately.
