Lourdes starts plastic surgery-based burn center

Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center has partnered with Grossman Burn Centers, a world renowned plastic surgery-based medical practice specializing in burn injuries, to establish a six-bed burn unit at the local hospital. The new burn unit, slated to open in May, will provide comprehensive treatment of burn injuries – from acute care and reconstruction to rehabilitation and psychological counseling.

The only comparable treatment option for the hundreds of children and adults who receive significant burn injuries from New Orleans to the Texas border has been the 14-bed burn center in Baton Rouge, according to Lourdes officials. “Burn injuries from industrial accidents and every day household occurrences continue to test the limits of the area’s medical resources and really demonstrate how critical it is to have enough dedicated burn beds and the trained surgeons to treat the injured patients,” says GBC President Dr. Peter H. Grossman. “Being plastic surgery-based, we see patients past their initial treatment and all the way through the many reconstructive follow-up surgeries that serious burn injuries often require. Our patients respond very well to this continuity of care and the level of expertise we bring.”

The Grossman Burn Center at Lourdes will be located on the 4th floor in ICU on the west-wing. There will also be an outpatient clinic for post-operative follow-up care and treating less severe burn injuries. The unit is in the process of hiring a surgeon who will be trained by GMC's burn-care specialists.
