Lady Lions vie for state hoops title

Before this year, the Lafayette High girls baskeball team had never advanced past the second round of the playoffs. Coming off a history-making semi-final win against Pontchatoula Tuesday, the girls (28-4) play top-seeded Archbishop Chapelle Saturday at 6:30 p.m. for the Class 5A state championship in the Top 28 tournament in Monroe.

The Lady Lions' semifinal game against Pontchatoula went down to the wire. The Lions were down by two points with 29.2 seconds on the clock when Breanne Guy sunk a three-pointer, bringing the score to 50-49.

The victory was all the sweeter for the Lions, who had fallen to Pontchatoula on Dec. 27 by a score of 75-31.
