by Walter Pierce

The state Bond Commission has approved nearly $40 million in projects in southwest Louisiana, including three large undertakings in the Acadiana area. The local projects include education infrastructure and economic development. The commission also approved more than $42 million in GO Zone funding for continuing hurricane recovery and rebuilding.

Vermilion Parish stands the benefit the most in the Acadiana region. The commission approved a $1.4 million loan for the Vermilion Parish School Board to build a new cafeteria at Meaux Elementary. The city of Abbeville, meanwhile, has been approved for a $500,000 cooperative endeavor agreement between Economic Development District No. 1 and Lowe’s Home Centers for the installation of a Lowe’s home-improvement store. Approval of the project is subject to a Bond Commission feasibility report.

In addition, the commission approved a $570,000 loan for the Acadia Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau to purchase property.
