In response to the article "Road Rage" that discussed the renaming of Willow Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (Jan. 25), I would like to discuss an issue that seems to be slipping through the cracks while everyone is jumping all over the race issue. We already have a Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Is there some reason that this road isn't good enough? And if that is the case, then why? Is it not good enough because of the quality of living or the crime in the area? And if that's the problem, then whose fault is it that the neighborhood isn't up to par for such a prestigious name?
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for recognizing Dr. King. I wholeheartedly believe that he was a great man. Just don't forget that we have already named a street after him and not wanting to honor him is not the case here.
Are we going to change it again if certain people decide after some time that Willow is not good enough? Are we then going to turn it into another race issue when there is some resistance to that change? And what about the people who already live on our existing Martin Luther King Jr. Drive? Do we change that to MLK1 and Willow to MLK2? Where is the consideration for these residents?
You two councilman who will not let it go, grow up. These things are not racial issues until you make them so. How are we all supposed to patch up the racial divide when you play the race card every time something doesn't go your way? Put the numbers to the paper. There are much more important things going on in the world and in this city than this excuse for another battle of the races. You would do well to see that.
