Artist George Marks appointed to state board

by Mary Tutwiler

Artist, entrepreneur, community activist, political instigator and court jester George Marks can add another title to his list of epithets. The Arnaudville native has been appointed by Gov. Bobby Jindal to the Louisiana State Arts Council.

Marks has been mixing it up since he came home to Arnaudville in 2003, spearheading an artists community that would provide studio and living space for artists-in-residence along the banks of Bayous Teche and Fusillier. Following his lead, galleries, studios, dance clubs and workshops popped up in Arnaudville like mushrooms after a summer rain.

The 24-member Louisiana State Arts Council addresses arts-related issues of importance to Louisiana and approves grants awarded by the Louisiana Division of the Arts. Marks was nominated by Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu.
