Hatchet coming down for GM dealers today

by Leslie Turk

Today General Motors is notifying more than 1,000 dealers that it will not renew their franchises after October 2010.

On Thursday Chrysler released a list of 789 dealers it is eliminating (read INDsider contributor Louis David’s story here), but GM does not plan to publicly announce which dealers it is cutting. The dealers will be notified by letter; GM owns Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Cadillac.

It's highly unlikely any local dealerships will be affected. Paul Stroderd, Lafayette-based Courtesy Automotive Group’s general manager, could not be reached for comment this morning. Courtesy’s headquarters — where GMC trucks, Cadillac, Buick and Pontiac are sold — is at 4750 Johnston St. in the old Service Merchandise building. It also has dealerships in New Iberia, Abbeville, Franklin and Morgan City. Courtesy is Lafayette's largest GM dealer.
