I sympathize with the immigrant shortage for seasonal labor ("Cap Hit," March 23), but wouldn't it be a good idea to fill this gap with able people on unemployment or welfare? Who knows, the businesses using seasonal labor might have a skilled crew the next year, because the selected pool will be back on welfare and unemployment soon after the season. Maybe there is a work-for-welfare program, or this idea might be too sophisticated for our Legislature. These comments are in no way directed at those who really need these programs; they are directed at those who abuse the system.
