A beautiful spring afternoon at the Wine Loft in River Ranch was the setting for the retirement party of one of Lafayette’s finest and most respected bankers. People packed the house to show their love and appreciation for Barry Berthelot, and also to celebrate his long career in the banking business and his dedicated public and community service. Berthelot spent the last 22 years of his career at the helm of one of Acadiana’s largest financial institutions, Chase Bank, during a time of major global consolidation in the industry. He is also a former CAO for the city of Lafayette and once chaired both the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Acadiana. He’s also a member of the first Leadership Lafayette class, and is active as a St. Thomas More parent. Always respected as a man of few words, Berthelot’s speech to the crowd was characteristically humble and brief as he thanked his family, friends and co-workers and talked about his plans to consult with multi-generational family businesses to ensure a successful transition to heirs who want to continue their family’s traditions in trade. He will definitely be missed in the business world, but I am sure that he will continue to be an ever-present kindred spirit with the best intentions for the Lafayette community.
