SURE AS SHOOTIN’
Buried near the middle of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office annual report, between a chart enumerating how many yellow squash and banana peppers the department’s vegetable garden produced and another detailing inmate bookings, is the sportsman’s find of the summer: the LPSO shooting range. Once the exclusive domain of the chiseled, the range is now open to civilians on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Simply undergo a short orientation course, sign a waiver saying you won’t hold the LPSO liable if you shoot your eye out, and fire away. Best of all, it’s free. Talk about a public service! The range is located at 350 Michael Ann Road in north Lafayette near Acadiana Park. Even Google Map couldn’t find it, so call 236-5607 (LPSO) or 236-5665 (range) for directions. — Walter Pierce

BLISSFUL BURGER
Say aloha to your hunger pangs with a delicious Hawaiian Burger from Legends Annex. Crafted around the original Legends patty, which is a mouth-watering (and very secret) burger recipe invented by owner Jared Doise’s mother, the Hawaiian Burger, $8, gives a delicious twist to boring old bar burgers. Atop the scrumptious patty sits pepper jack cheese, lettuce, sliced tomato, applewood smoked bacon, and the finishing touch — a grilled pineapple slice. You can even order it wrapped up in a tortilla rather than on a bun. Somehow it all works, especially when you throw one of Legends’ famous margaritas in the mix to wash it all down. Legends Annex is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday for lunch, from 5:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Saturday. WEAR YOUR HEART ON YOUR SLEEVE
Local graphic designer Blake Lagneaux’s heart is as big as his talent, and this year that winning combination is behind the surprisingly fashion forward Camp Bon Coeur T-shirt. For the past several years Lagneaux’s been designing (pro-bono of course) T-shirts that reflect the great work of the camp — a fun-filled getaway for children ages 7-16 with congenital heart defects. Out of his creativity this year emerged a gray tee featuring a tribal pattern of intricate hearts of varying sizes and shades, with bold yellow lettering to offset the monochromatic tones. When Camp Bon Coeur Program Director Ben Smith got a glimpse, he knew the stylish look would appeal to all ages of boys and girls, men and women. Because of the wrap-around design of the art, Downtown T-Shirts was called in for expert printing services, and a fundraising effort was born. To order the tee and help support the camp’s great work, e-mail Smith at [email protected] or call 233-8437; you’ll have to mail a check for $15 (or more, if you want to make a donation) to Camp Bon Couer, 405 W. Main St., Lafayette, LA 70501. Camp Bon Couer (good heart) is held annually on 74 acres at the Acadian Baptist Center in Eunice, offering a junior Olympic pool, putt-putt golf course, nature trail, craft room, canteen, two tennis courts, canoe lake and recreation room.
