Redflex rage redux

by Mary Tutwiler

Lafayette isn’t the only place where the sight of a Redflex van makes drivers see red. The firm, which contracts with local governments to issue automated speeding tickets, has been dropped by Livingston Parish’s law enforcement officials. This week, after the “speeder van” illegally parked on the private property of the Carroll Baptist Church in Walker, church officials had the van towed. This was the last straw in a litany of traffic violations committed by speed van drivers, as well as the company issuing hundreds of questionable speeding tickets that resulted in the parish refunding drivers for more than 2,000 tickets. The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office discontinued participating in the program yesterday, while the Livingston Parish Council, which has a contract with the company, will address their concerns with Redflex imminently.
