Sales tax holiday today and Saturday

by Leslie Turk

The Louisiana Sales Tax Holiday, which provides an exemption from state sales tax on the first $2,500 of the purchase price of most individual items, is today and through midnight tomorrow. You must pay state sales tax on the portion of the purchase price of any item in excess of $2,500.

The holiday applies to the 4 percent state sales tax, but not apply to the sales taxes levied by parishes, municipalities, school boards, and other political subdivisions of the state.

The Legislature set by the holiday for the first consecutive Friday and Saturday of August annually.

Merchants across the state are offering additional discounts to stimulate the economy.
