Brees v. Delhomme: Who you pullin' for?

by Leslie Turk

It’s the dilemma we’ll all face Sunday at 3 p.m. when the undefeated New Orleans Saints face the Carolina Panthers, 3-4, in the Superdome. Breaux Bridge native and former UL standout Jake Delhomme, who took the Panthers to the Superbowl in his first year as starting QB, has been struggling this year but is coming off a 34-21 victory over the Cardinals Sunday (sweet revenge against the team responsible for last year’s embarrassing playoff collapse that included five Delhomme interceptions).

Delhomme was actually out of the game in the third quarter with a chest injury but appears ready for Sunday’s game.

The problem for the Saints is that Delhomme is so at home in the dome, having never lost a game there as a starting QB for the Panthers — a winning streak that reaches as far back as his time as a Ragin’ Cajun and as the Saints backup.

Make no mistake; this is a big game. For the Saints, defeating a division rival at home — especially the team that took the division last year — is critical. So while we’ll be pulling for Delhomme to show he’s getting his mojo back, most of us want to see the Saints continue their winning streak.

And what a ride it’s been so far. The Saints 7-0. Who'd a thunk it?

While the Saints have the depth of talent never before seen in the franchise’s four decades, QB Drew Brees is the key ingredient in the team's impressive record. Today’s Times-Picayune story, Spot On: Brees has a knack for pass placement, analyzes how the QB can find his target even when the receiver adjusts his route.
