Bayou Teche trash bash this weekend

by Mary Tutwiler

The effort to clean up Bayou Teche embarks on Sunday, Nov. 15, when a flotilla of motor boats, canoes and kayaks takes on a log jam of refrigerators, hot water heaters and Styrofoam cups that litter the bayou.

Cajuns for Bayou Teche, the organization that has made a concerted effort to  sweep the Teche from Port Barre to Morgan City, is picking up steam, enlisting the Breaux Bridge Kiwanis Club, Keep St. Martin Beautiful and Acadiana Resource Conservation and Development, St. Martin Parish Sheriff Ronnie Theriot and St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz in this leg of the trash bash.

Volunteers should meet at the Breaux Bridge boat launch and pavilion at noon, Nov. 15. Aside from a feeling of civic pride, folks will be rewarded with home cooked gumbo by Furman Guillory and The Advocate Acadiana bureau chief Richard Burgess. Last week a fundraiser for the group, held at Cafe Des Amis, raised $1,600. To make a donation, get involved or for more information, call Blake Couvillion 230-8596.
