Blue Moon on New Year's Eve

by Nathan Stubbs

Cue the old Elvis record. For the first time in 20 years, New Year's Eve star gazers will bear witness to the fabled "blue moon." Don't expect the moon to actually be blue. While typically full moons occur once a month,  a "blue moon" refers to the rare cycle where a second full moon appears in a single month.

Dec. 2 marked this month's first full moon, and the blue moon is scheduled for Dec. 31. This will be the first blue moon to hit on New Year's Eve since 1990. The next time it will happen will be 2028.
