La. SC chief justice suffers stroke

by Leslie Turk

Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Catherine “Kitty” Kimball suffered an ischemic stroke early Sunday. The court confirmed in a Sunday afternoon press release that Kimball underwent a successful procedure to remove the blockage and was in recovery in intensive care.

Kimball, 64, is the first woman elected to the state’s highest court. She served as an associate justice from 1992 to 2008 and has been chief justice since January of last year. She replaced Chief Justice Pascal Calogero, who retired after 36 years on the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court spokeswoman Valerie Willard did not have an update on Kimball’s condition this morning. Willard said she is awaiting word from Kimball's family.
