Broussard bars get Super exemption

by Nathan Stubbs

Bars in the town of Broussard are normally shuttered on Sunday, but with the New Orleans Saints making a historic run to the Super Bowl, the Broussard city council saw fit to make a super exemption of the city's blue laws. The Broussard council voted Tuesday to allow bars to open on Sunday, Feb. 7, the day of the game. The Advocate reports the exception comes with several conditions attached:

Bars must get a special events permit from the state and a letter of approval from the city, in addition to hiring one off-duty police officer for every 50 people the bar can hold. Bars that meet the requirements will be allowed to open from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. the day of the game.

In Lafayette, blue laws prevent any establishment from selling alcohol before noon. Bars are open but must close at midnight, two hours before their normal closing time.
