Women Across Cultures at UL

by Mary Tutwiler

As the landscape around us comes to life in the spring, it's a reminder that we should also awaken our minds. Dr. Mary Ann Wilson is offering a course in "Women Across Cultures," exploring worlds and customs we rarely encounter in our everyday lives.

The books she will be teaching are classics: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Heat and Dust, with an accompanying film, Gish Jen's Who's Irish?, Julia Alvarez's Once Upon a QuinceaƱera and Bharati Mukherjee's Desirable Daughters. Wilson's style is big on participation, there's a lot of discussion and exchange rather then lecture.

The course runs Tuesdays in March, beginning March 2, 6:30 8:30 p.m., at Griffin Hall, on the UL campus. The cost is $75, each registration fee includes a donation to The Friends of the Humanities, the organization that supports these community classes. Books may be purchased locally or online.
