Lafayette City Parish President Joey Durel kicks off a series of six town hall meetings tonight with the theme, "Lafayette Consolidated Charter: Is it working for you?" The town halls come amidst renewed discussions weighing the benefits of a consolidated government. A council committee set up in January to review upcoming reapportionment issues wound up recommending the council call a public election on de-consolidation that would revert Lafayette back to its old city and parish charters (the council opted to defer that ordinance on March 9). Council Chairman Jay Castille is now calling on the formation of a charter commission to recommend amendments to the current charter for voters to consider in Spring 2011.
In a press release announcing the town hall meetings, Durel says, "These meetings are a result of conversations that I have had with constituents in collaboration with Councilmen Don Bertrand, Keith Patin, and Kenneth Boudreaux. We all recognize there is a need in our community to discuss this issue, and so we are looking forward to hearing about our constituents' experiences with consolidation and questions about the futures."
