Acadiana Open Source software group now meeting at LITE

by Dege Legg

Local open source software enthusiasts meet up at the end of each month.

Acadiana computer programmers and software enthusiasts have joined forces and initiated a monthly Acadiana Open Source Group. Meetings are on the last Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the LITE Center on Cajundome Blvd. The group will discuss and explore all facets, trends, and technology regarding open source software, which is free to the publicjust like these meetings.

"We're open to the public and all ages," says Matthew Turland, one of the organizers of the group. "We generally get people who use software as part of their career (developers or network administrators), but we welcome everyone including personal and business users."

Many computer users are not aware of the wealth of free software that is available to the public; one of the most prominent being browsers like Mozilla Firefox. "Raising awareness and evangelizing open source software and its benefits is part of the mission of our group," adds Turland. "If someone is interested in using open source software and isn't sure how to get started, we're more than happy to help them out."

If interested in attending the Acadiana Open Source Group, give Turland a call at 412-0178.
