So many of us live our lives in service to self. Eddie Richard lived his life in service to others.
Throughout his years as a public servant, through more than 50 years of his dedication to Rotary's myriad humanitarian projects, through the recent years of devotion to Congrès Mondial, Eddie's love of family and community was evident in ways great and small.
Whether it was building goodwill on the worldwide stage or displaying an Acadian flag yard sign in front of his house in Scott, Eddie led by example. And for more than 50 years, his loving wife Polly was at his side, every step of the way.
Rotarians are encouraged to apply a "Four Way Test" to everything they say or do: "Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better relationships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" Eddie was one of those brave souls who dedicate their lives to public service even knowing the difficulties and personal sacrifices that entails because the Four Way Test is not only Rotary's truth; it was Eddie's.
Eddie passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1. He leaves for us all an example of deep and abiding love of family and heritage. We need only listen to [his son] Zachary [Richard's] lyrics to remember.
