Two months ago, Independent writer and musician Dege Legg released his first solo album, Folk Songs of the American Longhair. It didn't take long for his style of post modern Delta blues to catch on with locals, and last month Legg took to the road, promoting his album up the Eastern Seaboard and down the Mississippi Valley. Legg got back last week to news that his music bowled over producers of The Deadliest Catch and After The Catch, the most popular shows on Tuesday nights on The Discovery Channel.
"I got a call from the producers saying they loved the freaking record," Legg says, with astonishment still fresh in his tone. Tim Mann, one of the producers, contacted Legg and asked to use the first song on the album, "Hard Row to Hoe," as the theme song for After the Catch. In its fifth season now, the show is a follow-up to The Deadliest Catch, where boat captains gather to talk shop and discuss the highlights. This season will be especially poignant because long-time cast member Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie, died in February of a stroke while off-loading crabs on his boat.
After the Catch is currently filming in New Orleans, and Legg cameos as local color, playing his Dobro on the street in the French Quarter. In addition to the theme song, his atmospheric slide playing provides meditative interludes between scenes. After the Catch airs on Tuesday, June 15, at 9 p.m. CST on The Discovery Channel.
