Matt Simmons, the well-known oil investor-turned-author whose "peak oil" theory on world petroleum supplies, while controversial, helped focus U.S. awareness on its sources of energy, has died. The 67-year-old Simmons passed away from an apparent heart attack at his home in Maine, according to Bloomberg. HIs most recent book, Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy, argued that foreign sources of oil were unreliable and that the age of ready sources of petroleum was over.

Simmons was in Lafayette last spring to speak before a sold-out Cajundome Convention Center crowd as part of the Entrée to Business series, presented by MidSouth Bank and produced by ABiz and The Independent Weekly.
