On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the country's history, wreaked havoc on New Orleans, sending hundreds of thousands of evacuees fleeing to safety in numerous states and cities, including Lafayette and our surrounding communities. More than 1,800 people lost their lives in the storm and subsequent floods that devastated the city's homes, businesses and infrastructure, forever altering life in the Crescent City.
