Wild Hog and Deer Cookoff benefits Bayou Teche

Bayou Teche is getting a lot of TLC these days from Blake Couvillion and his group of Cajuns who are working to clean up the stream. The latest event is an easy sell - the Wild Hog and Deer Cook-Off. Black pot game cookery is a Cajun speciality, deep flavors stewed down into some intense gravies and sauce piquants. The event is planned for Nov. 13, so there's still time for all you hunters and camp cooks to sign up, as late as the day of the event. For the general public, who just wants a taste of something good, the cost is a mere $5 entry fee and all you can eat. There's a $20 fee to enter the competition. Music will be provided by DJ Bubba, and there's a live auction of everything from swamp tours, to overnight stays at campgrounds to iron pots and pans, which will take place at 1 p.m, after the judging. Prizes are iron gravy pots for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place dishes as well as a People's Choice award.

Cajuns for Bayou Teche is a program of the TECHE Project, a local non-profit organization dedicated to cleaning up, restoring and preserving the legacy and water quality of Bayou Teche. Cajuns for Bayou Teche volunteers and partners have removed an estimated 20 tons of garbage and debris from the waterway since spring of 2009. Proceeds from the cook-off will go towards ensuring this program can continue and to educate the public about non-point source pollution prevention.
