City Parish Councilman Purvis Morrison has requested that his wife be allowed to fill out the remainder of his council term.
Update: Council Clerk Norma Dugas sent out a press release this morning noting that the council will be accepting resumes from qualified residents of District 1 to fulfill Morrison's unexpired term. Resumes will be accepted until noon, Dec. 17, 2010 and should be forwarded to Clerk of the Council Norma Dugas, P.O. Box 4017-C, Lafayette, LA 70502. The council will make the appointment at a special meeting on Tuesday January 4, 2011.
City Parish Councilman Purvis Morrison has requested that his wife be allowed to fill out the remainder of his council term. Morrison won election as mayor of Scott last month and will move over to his new position in January. Because there will then be less than a year left on his term, the council will appoint his interim replacement until next fall's council elections decide who will begin serving in 2012. Any interim appointment will prohibited by charter from running in the 2011 elections.
Morrison says he spoke with council chair Jay Castille about his request a couple of weeks ago. "Many people in my district," he says, "they supported me running for mayor of Scott but they also were very concerned about who would fulfill my term. And my wife, because she's been involved, she knows a lot of these people. She's been with me hand in hand and she knows some of the projects that I'm trying to accomplish."
Mary Morrison is a business instructor with the Louisiana Technical College who's been active with her husband's political campaigns. She herself ran for school board, unsuccessfully, in 2006.
"It's up to the council," Purvis Morrison says. "If they want to vote for a regular resume process or whatever they decide. I won't even be able to vote."
