After being sentenced to 14 years in prison, former Opelousas High School teacher Larry Caillier II professed his innocence to Judge Richard Haik and is now seeking to withdraw his guilty plea in the case. The Advocate reports today on the drama that unfolded in the courtroom yesterday, where Callier said that his attorneys had convinced him to sign a plea deal which he now feels was a mistake.

Caillier, the son of former Opelousas Chief of Police Larry Caillier, pleaded guilty to one count of child pornography in July, which carries a mandatory minimum of 5 years and maximum of 20 years in prison. He has been represented by attorneys Elbert Guillory, also a state senator from Opelousas, and Daniel Stanford. Caillier was accused of receiving a sexually explicit picture of a 15-year-old female student on his cell phone after the two had exchanged texts.

Haik is now giving Caillier 10 days to file a motion to set aside his plea. Both Stanford and Guillory requested to be removed from the case and a federal public defender has been appointed to Caillier. Read the full Advocate story here.
