Glitter and glam are moving from evening to afternoon. By Hope Rurik

As fall fades into winter, things start to sparkle. There are twinkling trees, shining decorations, glowing fires, sparkling fireworks displays and flashy party dresses. This year, however, sequins, glitter and reflective detail have escaped their party prisons and made their way to the everyday.

"All that people used to reserve for balls and cocktail parties, with some taste, has been brought into the daytime," says Molly Finnegan, owner of Oil Center boutique Molli.
Glammed-out tops and tanks have become transitional pieces that can take an outfit from day to night depending whether it's paired with denim and boots or a skirt and heels, adds Finnegan.

"Sequins, glitter and glam are definitely in," says Amy Chappuis, manager of Little Town, adding that there are looks for every age. This season's signature sparkle and sheen have marked every style from full sequin dresses to clutches and handbags to mini skirts, trouser shorts and even pumps reminiscent of Dorothy's slippers in every color and tone.

All of these options offer more than just an opportunity to shine during the day, but Shoe La La and Knotting Hill manager Katelyn Miller says they also offer a new option for putting together party looks.

"Separates for parties and [other events] are a good way to go," says Miller. "You'll never be wearing the same thing as someone else if you choose to put a top and a skirt together instead of a dress."

Of course, with every seasonal "must" comes a list of "must-nots" that go with it. With sequins, Miller says less is more.

"Avoid wearing a piece with other shiny things or lots of shiny accessories," she says. "For instance, with a sequined top or tank, stick to simple pants and jacket solids, simple clean scarves and [pieces] like that."
