Cow punk, roots rock, country-billy, whatever you want to call it, Dash Rip Rock has been around for a while. Formed in Baton Rouge in 1984, the band took its name from the fictional character of the same name in the classic TV series The Beverly Hillbillies. Enduring multiple line-up changes over the past quarter century - a classic line-up included Fred Leblanc of Cowboy Mouth on drums and Ned "Hoaky" Hickel on bass - the band has soldiered on through ups and downs in the industry with singer, songwriter, guitarist and bandleader Bill Davis always at the helm, Patrick Johnson on bass and Eric Padua on drums. Combining first-class chops with twang and a sense of humor has been Dash Rip Rock's calling card. Their rockabilly-tinged college rock gazes at life through a heartfelt but slightly twisted viewpoint. Dash Rip Rock hits the Acadiana Center for the Arts performance theater for a special Louisiana Crossroads show on Feb. 19. There will be three shows all in the area. For each installment, Dash Rip Rock teams up on a double bill with acoustic, country traditionalists The Swingin' Haymakers with Bill Davis backing vocalist Kim Roberts.

CRYING COUNTRY
If you like your country music with more old school tumbleweed and Texas twang than fast burning plastic of the modern stuff, then you should pick up Yvette Landry's new solo CD Should Have Known. Like some Cajun queen bee from another era, the Bonsoir, Catin bassist has been banging out solo shows, picking an acoustic guitar and belting out vintage country-inspired, original tunes that trace the arc of romance from holding hands to one night stands to making long term plans. Her songs are filled with bitter-sweet tales of love lost, found and turned around. They'll have you crying in your beer and jerking the tears off your shirt sleeves. Over the years, Landry has toured the world as a multi-instrumentalist performing with the likes of BonSoir Catin, Balfa Toujours, Red Stick Ramblers, Pine Leaf Boys, Walter Mouton, Steve Riley, Dirk Powell, Donna the Buffalo and many others. The Richard Sale Barn in Abbeville hosts a night with Yvette Landry singing old time country music on Feb. 19. It's a smoke-free concert. STRAW BOSS
Lafayette band Strawboss made the rounds in the early '00s, shaking off Pearl Jam comparisons and the like by digging down into the dirty rock bag of blues, roots and Stones-inspired rock & roll. Fronted by wildman/vocalist Cory Guidry, the band kicked out a mod-rock mix more complex and challenging than many of their mod-rock counterparts. Strawboss reunites for a show at the Blue Moon on Feb. 19 with Strawboss guitarist Brian Marshall opening the show with his own side band. Go check them out.
TRUE MAN
Lafayette's reining roots, rasta and reggae kings, True Man Posse is an institution. Banging it out for more than two decades, the band is the preeminent standard by which all Acadiana reggae bands will be measured in the coming decades. You don't stay together as a band for that long without some creative magic and serious brotherhood. It's the stuff you can't buy off the Internet, put in a bottle or keep in a box. Go see True Man Posse on Feb. 18 at the Blue Moon.
THE PLAYBOYS
Fresh off the release of their new genre bending Cajun album Grand Isle, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys bring their act to Lake View Park in Eunice on Feb. 19. On a side note, Gumbo Jet, featuring David Greely (of the Mamou Playboys), Daniel Gale and Jo Vidrine, plays Café des Amis on Feb. 16.
