MISS EMILY AND THE COLLARD GREENS
You didn't know she had it in her, but she does. Local Lafayette girl Emily Neustrom has been quietly picking a guitar and singing songs on her own. Now she's put together her own band named Miss Emily and the Collard Greens.

FIGHTS
Indie-disco dance boys and girls can get their slow wave on Feb. 25 when FIGHTS brings its melodic, dancy jam to the Blue Moon for another round of tripping the light fantastico. Composed of Lafayette scene heavyweights, FIGHTS combines indie rock, good vibe and danceable juju into a groove stew of rad tunes. Also on the bill is New Orleans' The Other Planets - an "eclectic gonzo musical ensemble that combines elements of freak rock, avant-jazz, comedy and social commentary." Do it.

MISS EMILY AND THE COLLARD GREENS
You didn't know she had it in her, but she does. Local Lafayette girl Emily Neustrom has been quietly picking a guitar and singing songs on her own. Now she's put together her own band named Miss Emily and the Collard Greens. She describes it as "a greasy spoon full of salty, rootsy country blues goodness." Good enough for me! Miss Emily and the Collard Greens play the Blue Moon on Feb. 24. Following their set will be an Old Country Hootenanny Jam. Folk are invited to bring instruments, join in and sing along to other country classics in their non-church voices. Musicians and singers welcome to bring songs. The only rules: four chords or less, pre-1970s songs, and no Brad Paisley i.e. only songs Johnny Cash would approve of. This is a free show.

FREE MUSICIAN DENTAL CLINIC
If you're musician or somehow involved in the music industry and your teeth are messed up, there's good news. Fresh off the success of the free dental clinic they conducted in December, the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation Healthcare Initiative, MusiCares, the Smile Program and the Acadiana Center for the Arts are teaming up to host another one. Trying to get by with no health or dental insurance and not look like a hillbilly is a pain, so check it out. The free dental clinic is open to all area music professionals - musicians, music producers, sound engineers, roadies and anyone else involved in some capacity - and will be held at the AcA on March 1 from 8:30 a.m. until the last one leaves. To make an appointment for the day of the clinic, call 1-877-626-2748 or email [email protected] or [email protected]. And for more info, call Kathy Richard at 652-5780 ([email protected]). The primary mission of LCEF is to be a catalyst for the development and enhancement of the distinct cultural industries of Louisiana by promoting the economic health and quality of life of Louisiana's cultural economy workforce. LCEF's Healthcare Initiative facilitates access to affordable primary health care services for cultural workers and their families. www.culturaleconomy.org.

HuLaLa. This show is the first in a series of metal shows with various performances and appearances from Tattoo Studios to black-light hula hoop dancers as well as spaces for artists, tattooists and assorted vendors. And last but not least, on Feb. 27 the Elephant Six Holiday Surprise tour comes through town (see our LivingIND cover). All of it goes down at Grant Street this weekend.

FMX
When something is just plain rad, you simply admit it. Freestyle motocross is one of those things. Once FMXers started doing can-cans and back flips, it was like a new chapter being burnt into the air. The Cajundome hosts two nights of FMX action on Feb. 25-26 when eight of the world's top FMX riders take to the skies and perform tricks never thought possible on a dirt bike: back flips, Hart Attacks, Saran Wraps and bar hops are just a handful of the gravity-defying tricks performed at these shows. Check it out.

LA 31 BEER DANCE OFF
Bayou Teche Brewing, Schilling Distributors and Whiskey River Landing are working to bring back an old Cajun and Creole tradition with the LA 31 Biere Pale Cajun-Zydeco Dance Competitions. The first dance competition goes down Feb. 27 at Whiskey River Landing on the Henderson Levee. Historically, these dance competitions have been a large part of the rich culture of Acadiana. Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin' Cajuns will start playing at 4 p.m. The band will feature three songs during the contest. The first will be an at-large elimination round to select the top four couples who will compete in the semi-finals. The top two couples in the semifinals will compete in the final round to crown the overall best dancing couple. Bust it.
