Here's a good cause if there ever were one: Autism. I'm going to let the organizer of the event, musician Jim Nobles, tell it in his own words. I am a father of a 7-year old little girl with autism. Cadence Olivia Nobles was born March 1, 2004 at LGMC. She has had developmental delays since she was born. At 2.5 years old, it became obvious that she wasn't meeting her developmental milestones. At 3 years old she was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Delay. And at 3.5 years old, her diagnosis was changed to mild autism, which soon was changed to moderate autism. Cadence has a very wide vocabulary, but she only speaks in three-word utterances. At 7 she is still potty training. Cadence cannot read or write. She is in the Autism Program at Green T. Lindon in Youngsville. Cadence is the happiest person I have ever met in my life. Though sometimes her happiness can be a little hard to manage. She is very happy. Cadence loves car rides, water play and listening to music, particularly bluegrass, zydeco, hip hop, and garage rock. I have lived in Lafayette my whole life and have been in and out of just about every scene in town, be it music or service industry. I'm currently the drummer for Not a Death Ray. I'm not a perfect father and I'm not rich. But I can bring people together and have fun raising money and enjoying live music. The Autism Society of Acadiana 2011 Walk of Hope and Family Fun Day is being held March 26 at Parc International from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. There will be food from local vendors, music, face painting and activities for the kids. Hoping to ride the awareness wave from the Walk of Hope that same day, myself and Artmosphere will be hosting a benefit March 26 for the ASAC. I'm asking for us all to get together and celebrate being alive and having hope. The Autism benefit runs from 2 p.m. 2 a.m. Bands on the bill include Bluegrass Jam Revue, Ronnie Vice Blues Trio, Good Vibes, Oceans & Chimneys, El Domania, Bones, Not a Death Ray and Brass Mimosa. GUITAR SYMPOSIUM
If you're a kid and you play guitar, you NEED to check out this event sponsored by the Louisiana Guitar Society and the Lafayette Parish Performing Arts Academy. It's a guitar symposium promoting guitar education in Acadiana. This is the first annual student guitar symposium with student competition (ages 10 - 13) with cash prizes. Judges for the competition will be Roddie Brian Gaudino and Taylor Guarisco. In addition, there will be a student concert and live performances by Roddie Romero, Ted Broussard and me. Lafayette Music, Parish Ink, Smokin Strings n Things, Tipitina's Co Op, Guitar Acadiana, Acadiana School of The Arts, and The Performing Arts Academy will have booths set up. If you're into ripping, shredding, cowboy chording or just picking, you have to go to the first annual guitar symposium. It takes place at Lafayette High on March 26 and starts at 11 a.m. Be there. T Bone Burnett calls her "the trusted keeper of the flame." We call her Ann Savoy and she's celebrating the release of her latest CD, Black Coffee. Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural Jr. made his bones as the cornerstone of Clifton Chenier's classic Red Hot Louisiana Band lineup in 1976. By 1986, he had his own band and with his own blues-, gospel- and funk-tinged take on zydeco music. His band was the first to release a zydeco record on a major label. Over the years, he has riffed with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Dwight Yoakam, Willie Nelson and many others. The AcA and Louisiana Crossroads present an intimate evening with the squeezing master himself on March 26. These shows will showcase the accordion, horn, guitar and organ, in a set that will detail the career that propelled from this state and beyond.
