Because sometimes it takes a woman's touch

by Heather Miller

Lafayette Habitat for Humanity is seeking women volunteers for an upcoming construction project in north Lafayette. It's time for Acadiana women to dig out their Rosie the Riveter bandanas and flex their biceps: Lafayette Habitat for Humanity is looking for female volunteers to learn construction skills and assist in building homes for low-income families in Lafayette.

On May 6 and May 7 in north Lafayette, local women have the chance to be a part of Habitat's Women Build, a program that has helped to construct more than 1,800 houses across the globe.

The Lafayette chapter needs volunteers for three, four-hour shifts during the two-day build, May 6 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and May 7 from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers can sign up for one or all slots.

"This is every woman's chance at taking over our site for a weekend and proving to themselves that they are as capable of building a home as anyone else," says LHFH's Volunteer Services Director Joelle Boudreaux.

Construction experience is not required, and all training will be given at the site. The two-day build will be held at 108 E. Gilman Road in north Lafayette. The project involves several homes at different phases of construction. Volunteers can park at Coburn's Plumbing and HVAC at 530 N. Pierce St. near the site. Parking is prohibited on site or at the funeral home across the street.

For more information or to sign up for Women Build 2011, contact Joelle Boudreaux at [email protected] or 261-5041.

Can't make the May 6-7 build? The building site boasts volunteers weekly and includes individuals and groups who want to take part in the local effort. Contact Lafayette Habitat for Humanity for more information about volunteering.

Since its inception in 1992, Lafayette Habitat for Humanity has built 77 homes in Lafayette and Vermilion parishes for working families who can make mortgage payments but do not qualify for a market-rate loan.
