Calling all architects, engineers, designers, contractors ...

As part of Canstruction Lafayette, architects, engineers, designers, contractors, students and others will build magnificent structures of non-perishable food items that will later be deconstructed and delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana is seeking teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors, students, local businesses and organizations from the Lafayette area to participate in Canstruction. Teams will compete to design and build magnificent, complex structures entirely out of canned goods and non-perishable food items in a 10-foot-by-10-foot space that is 8 feet high. The giant structures will be on display at the Acadiana Center for the Arts beginning Saturday, June 11, in conjunction with ArtWalk, through Thursday, June 16.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, all food items from the structures will be delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank to help provide thousands of meals for men, women, children and seniors struggling with hunger. The overall winner of the competition will compete in an international Canstruction competition.

Hector LaSala, professor of Architecture and Design at UL Lafayette, is the 2011 Honorary Chair of Canstruction Lafayette. "Canstruction is a unique way to raise meals to help our neighbors in need," says LaSala. "These structures will be designed and constructed by teams of talented architects, engineers and students and provide thousands of nutritious meals to fight hunger in southwest Louisiana."

Canstruction is a trademark community service project of the Society for Design Administration and takes place in more than 150 cities nationwide. Canstruction Lafayette is sponsored by the Pinhook Foundation Inc. Supporting partner AcA is hosting the inaugural competition and exhibition.
