Lafayette's South Regional Library is doings its part for the month of May's remembrance days, which include Holocaust Remembrance Day (May 2), Armed Forces Day (May 21) and ending with Memorial Day the last Monday of the month.
Lafayette's South Regional Library is doings its part for the month of May's remembrance days, which include Holocaust Remembrance Day (May 2), Armed Forces Day (May 21) and ending with Memorial Day the last Monday of the month.
Running the entire month is Women in the Military: A Jewish Perspective. It's a photographic exhibit on loan from the National Museum of American Jewish Military History in Washington, D.C. It explains the important role Jewish women have played in America's wars, from the Civil War to modern day. It's self-guided and has 18 panels. This can be seen at any time during the library's regular hours.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7 is Women Veterans of Louisiana. Period uniforms and photographs, both personal and professional, will be on display while a panel of WWII female veterans talk about how they played a part in shaping history.
Mon Cher Camarade, the documentary by Pat Mire on Cajuns in WWII, will be shown at 6 p.m. on May 24. This film tells the story of how vital a role Cajuns played in winning the war, from acting as translators to functioning as citizen soldiers. Their stories are told through archival footage and through interviews with surviving soldiers themselves.
