Joel Robideaux, no party-Lafayette, on Friday pulled a bill that would have established a special taxing district on UL property, allowing the university to levy sales- and hotel occupancy taxes to fund the school's master plan. The bill raised the hackles of conservative groups, notably the Tea Party of Lafayette, which last week urged the lawmaker to yank the bill.
UL spokeswoman Christine Payton acknowledged in a press release that although the bill is dead for this session, it may be reintroduced later: ""The university will delay pursuit of the establishment of an economic development district until the master planning effort is complete," Payton said.
