Student-athlete GPA bill headed to House

by Walter Pierce

The bill would require student athletes to maintain a C average in order to participate in interscholastic sports.

Lafayette Democratic Rep. Rickey Hardy's annual bid to up the requirement for student athletes in Louisiana is scheduled for debate before the full House of Representatives Tuesday. With a ringing, 13-0 endorsement last week by the House Education Committee, the bill stands a fair chance before the lower chamber.

The bill would require student athletes to maintain a C average in order to participate in interscholastic sports. It has failed in two previous sessions, based in large part on opposition from the Louisiana High School Athletics Association and some district athletic directors who fear the loss of elite student-athletes whose grades aren't up to par.
