Throwin' elbows in the name of sports

by Anna Purdy

This Saturday, the pain is being brought by fast-pacing women in helmets and sparkly monikers to match their outfits.

The Acadiana Roller Girls have a bout this Saturday against the Cajun Roller Girls of Houma. Right now our girls are 5-0 and currently one of the only teams in the state that is undefeated. This bout is at Top Shelf in Youngsville. It begins at 7 p.m., but plenty of people are showing up early these days to tailgate in the hours preceding the start time.

Most people now know due to pop culture what is roller derby. Two teams of women race on skates for the jammer to pass and score the highest points, essentially. The women range in age from college to knockin' on 50. Anyone of any background or physical shape can play. It's pretty rough and ruthless and always fun.

Tickets are $10 in advance by contacting anyone in the roller derbythrough this Friday or $12 at the door, $5 for children ages 7 to 12 and kids under 7 get in free. If you want to buy tickets online, go here.

If you want to schmooze with the roller derby players, coaches or anyone else who supports the team, an afterparty celebrating the players will take place at Scandals.
