Although the Louisiana Democratic Party has been hemorrhaging white voters over the last decade, the loss has largely not translated into proportional gains for state Republicans, a new Advocate analysis finds. Rather, many disaffected Dems have simply dropped their party registration altogether, or they've found a home in a third party.

According to state voter-registration figures, 52 percent of white voters were Democrats a decade ago, compared to 30 percent for Republicans and 18 percent for other parties. Republicans now lead Democrats 38-37 percent among white voters, yet while the Democratic rolls declined by 15 percent during the decade, the GOP gained only 8 percent.
