Lafayette Consolidated Government has embarked on a new campaign to make residents more conscientious about keeping Bayou Vermilion clean. LCG has begun posting "Bayou Vermilion Watershed" signs at various locations in an effort to prevent both negligent and willful polluting of the waterway.
The Bayou Vermilion watershed comprises the smaller bayous, coulees, storm drains and ditches that drain into Bayou Vermilion. The overriding message from LCG is simple: Don't dump anything into the watershed you wouldn't want to drink or swim in - this includes trash, hazardous materials like paint thinner, bleach and used motor oil, yard waste and even pet droppings, and don't use fertilizer or pesticides if it's about to rain.
