District 3 City-Parish Councilman Brandon Shelvin, plagued during his inaugural term in office by a long and widely publicized list of legal entanglements and financial troubles, will not skate into re-election in October without opposition.
A well-regarded District 3 resident with long-standing political ties, both professionally and personally, in Lafayette Parish tells The Ind that he will run against Shelvin if no one else is willing to, a welcome development for many in this community troubled by Shelvin's repeated imbroglios.
"The bottom line is that Brandon Shelvin will not go into office unopposed," says the would-be candidate, who asked to remain anonymous, saying he will wait until the final day of qualifying - Thursday, Sept. 8 - before committing to the race. "If someone else steps up and qualifies - someone who is qualified and can beat him - then I'm not going to run. But if no one steps forward, then I'm certainly not going to allow him to go into office unopposed, because he's not qualified to hold that office."
The 2011 election cycle is getting more interesting by the day.
